About Japan Dugout
Japanese baseball fans read about their players in the majors in a different way than American fans do. Different outlets, different questions, a different sense of what counts as news. Japan Dugout reports what the Japanese press is saying about Shohei Ohtani, Yoshinobu Yamamoto, Roki Sasaki, Seiya Suzuki, Shota Imanaga, Munetaka Murakami, Kazuma Okamoto and the players who may come next.
How we work
- Each story is built from Japanese-language reporting. We summarize it in our own words, keep any quotation short, and link to the original.
- Every story shows the original Japanese headline, the outlet and the date, so you can check us.
- We do not translate whole articles.
- Numbers, dates and quotes are checked against the source before publishing. If outlets disagree, we say so or leave the number out.
- "Our read" is clearly labeled as our own view. News and opinion stay separate.
- We do not use wire or news photographs. Illustrations are original.
- We do not report on players' families, private lives or unconfirmed rumors.
How the stories are made
Japan Dugout is run by one person in Japan, with AI assistance. An AI model helps find recent Japanese reports, summarize them and draft the English text. Every story is checked against its sources and against MLB.com, ESPN or AP for numbers and dates before it is published. Stories are published each morning in Japan, so dates on the site follow Japan time, which is 13 to 14 hours ahead of the U.S. East Coast.
